2026 Building Code Revisions & Barrier Requirements

At the March 24 CONSPA Membership meeting, Connecticut State Building Inspector Omarys Vasquez discussed upcoming building code revisions, which are anticipated to take effect on July 1, 2026.

A significant change involves the barrier code for pool and spa construction: a powered safety cover will no longer be accepted as a replacement for a fence barrier.

Important Notes:

• Pools permitted after 6/30/26 will require fencing
• The power cover will no longer be accepted as a barrier replacement for a fence
• This change is not retroactive: pools permitted or built under the current code are not required to add a fence

Additional changes will be shared once the adoption is finalized. Ms. Vasquez noted that these codes are tied to the permit application date; any application received before the implementation date may follow the current requirements.
