Since 1985, the Northeast Spa and Pool Association has honored the memory of Harold J. “Duke” Ellington’s love and devotion to the swimming pool industry by rewarding students who selflessly perform acts of service for the good of others.

The Scholarship awards are open to all students who permanently reside within the NESPA region area.  (NESPA region area consists of CT, NJ, LI, Eastern NY & Eastern PA)  This includes, but not limited to, children of owners and employees of all NESPA firms.  The award will be presented to a graduating high school senior or to a matriculated college student whose permanent residence is within the NESPA territory.  Questions regarding the specific territory should be directed to the NESPA office.

In order to be considered for one of the awards, the individual must be nominated by an owner or employee of an NESPA member firm. Applicants who are in the immediate family of an owner or employee of NESPA member firm will be given special consideration.  An immediate family member is considered a spouse, children, step-children, grandchildren, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins or self. The primary consideration for the award is the performance of “good deeds,” or community service.  Scholastic achievement and financial need are also considered.

Two scholarships will be awarded in 2017 (a $3,000 scholarship and a $2,000 scholarship).

Participants were asked to provide the following:

Personal Statement: Applicant must provide a typed personal statement explaining the “good deeds” or public/community service for which he/she is being nominated.
